Re: AI and the rise of China: this is the New New World

Do you think "hooking up" the brain to a technology like the internet - however it is accomplished - presents some significant risks? In that, for instance, although you may be able to harness the power of such a vast network in retrieving information or communicating with others, it could also beco...

Re: The Externalities of the Democratic System

I think it absolutely does, because the government in that instance is less concerned over whether it will lose an election in the next couple of years. Most democracies cycle out politicians on a 5 year cycle but in practice it's closer to 2-3 years since campaigning begins well before, plus they a...

Re: Advice on a Friend (political)

I actually get that as well when dealing with them - the "where to even start" sensation. I think it takes an inordinate amount of patience.

I'm increasingly convinced that the more intelligent/sinister proponents of such measures are actually aware of the fact that they cause unemplo...

Re: AI and the rise of China: this is the New New World

I am my employer. I work as a freelancer in the banking sector. I’m simply at the point though where I’m considering changing to data analytics or software dev, as what I do right now hasn’t got much durability in it beyond the next few years. Anyway, I agree with your points re workflows ...

Re: Thoughts on Modern Intellectuals

I do! I enjoyed his ASU thoroughly, even if I don’t agree on some points. He’s a very academic writer, though, so a lot of the prose can be dense. His arguments against Marxism are great.

Re: Advice on a Friend (political)

What I find is that many of these people are completely oblivious to why people don’t agree with them or support worldviews contrary to their very abstract views on the world. Like on immigration, they really don’t understand the issues at hand and keep vilifying those of European descent for a desi...

Re: The Externalities of the Democratic System

Perhaps they realise it’s not whether you’re given a token vote on predetermined issues which counts towards whether a system is oppressive, beneficial etc, but the actual results it produces. In effect, non democratic regimes have to take into account public opinion. They just don’t need a rubber s...
